Bribie Island sits at the northern tip of Moreton Bay, separated from the mainland by the Pumicestone Passage — a long, sheltered stretch of water that's one of southeast Queensland's best-known fishing grounds. Unlike the southern bay islands, Bribie is connected to the mainland by a bridge, but the passage itself is only really explored properly by boat.
The passage side of Bribie is well protected from ocean swell, which makes it a comfortable trip for the Quintrex 430 once you're up that end of the bay. Most self-drive boaters launch from Toorbul or Sandstone Point, both of which sit right on the passage, for the shortest run across. Coming from our Marsden base, Scarborough is a further but still manageable option if you'd rather not tow all the way up first.
What to Do at Bribie Island
Pumicestone Passage Fishing
One of the region's best-known fishing grounds — whiting, flathead, bream and mud crabs across its sandbanks and channels.
White Patch
Calm, shallow water on the passage side, a popular spot for a swim or a quiet anchorage away from the boat traffic.
Buckleys Hole
A bird sanctuary at the island's southern tip, worth a slow cruise past for birdwatchers.
Sandbank Anchorages
Numerous sandbanks along the passage make for easy, low-stress anchoring on a rising tide.
Boating Conditions
The Pumicestone Passage side of Bribie Island is sheltered and generally manageable for the Quintrex 430 in typical conditions — it's the ocean-facing eastern side of the island, not covered by this trip, where conditions turn open and exposed. As with any longer run up the bay, check the wind forecast before you commit, particularly if launching from further south like Scarborough. A current Queensland Recreational Boat Licence (RBL) is required to operate the Quintrex 430, and every hire includes a full safety briefing, life jackets, EPIRB, GPS and Fishfinder.

Where do I launch for Bribie Island?
Toorbul and Sandstone Point boat ramps sit right on the Pumicestone Passage and are the closest launch points, or you can run up from Scarborough on a calm day for a longer trip.
