Do I Need a Boat Licence in Queensland?
A plain-English guide before you book your self-drive hire
Short answer: yes, in almost every case. If you're planning to hire and drive a boat like our Quintrex 430 Fishabout, Queensland law requires you to hold a valid Recreational Boat Licence, or an accepted interstate or overseas equivalent. Here's what that actually involves.
Who Needs a Recreational Boat Licence (RBL)
You must hold a Queensland marine licence to operate any boat with an engine power greater than 4.5kW (roughly 6hp). Our Quintrex 430 Fishabout is well above this threshold, so every self-drive hirer needs a valid licence before heading out.
The only common exceptions are if a licensed supervisor - someone who already holds a valid marine licence and can take immediate control if needed - is on board with you, or if the boat's motor is under 4.5kW. Neither applies to our vessel, so a licence is a firm requirement for driving it yourself.
How to Get a Queensland Boat Licence
Getting licensed is a straightforward, one-off process:
1. Meet the age requirement
You must be at least 16 years old to hold a marine licence in Queensland.
2. Complete a BoatSafe course
Pass an approved BoatSafe training and assessment program (or a recognised prior learning assessment) with an accredited provider.
3. Apply in person
Take your statement of competency (valid for 6 months), proof of identity, and the licence fee to a transport and motoring customer service centre.
4. It's valid for life
Once issued, your Queensland marine licence never expires - no renewals needed.
Visiting From Interstate or Overseas?
If you already hold a current recreational marine licence from another Australian state or territory, you can use it in Queensland as long as you're at least 16 and stay within its conditions - no extra paperwork needed for a short trip.
Visitors from overseas may be able to use a current, recognised overseas marine licence. If it's not in English, you'll need a NAATI-accredited translation to carry alongside it. If your overseas licence isn't on the recognised list, you'll need to complete a recognition-of-prior-learning assessment with an approved BoatSafe provider first.

Because the Quintrex 430 has a motor well over the 4.5kW threshold, we do require every self-drive hirer to hold a valid licence before we hand over the keys - a Queensland RBL, an accepted interstate licence, or a recognised overseas licence. On top of that, every hire includes a full safety briefing on the water, life jackets, EPIRB, GPS and Fishfinder, so even licensed drivers get a proper run-through before setting off.
